Clean Drain Pump on Front Load Washer

Hi, my name is Renae. I'm an appliance repair tech. And if you have a Maytag or Whirlpool front-load washing machine that does not have access to the drain pump filter in the front, I'm going to show you where you can probably find it.

The first thing you need to do is take the back cover off. It's just a bunch of screws and it'll pop right off. Once the cover's off, you're going to see the back of your drum in your motor. And if you look underneath, you're going to see your drain pump, which is right here. And to the right, that is your dream pump filter. That's where everything that gets left in your pockets gets stuck in your washing machine, and eventually, it'll clog your drain pump, and your washing machine won't drain. So you want to make sure that you check this regularly.

Before you start opening your drain pump filter, make sure you have something to catch the water that's going to spill out. I use a wet vac, but you can also just put a container underneath it. I recommend only doing about a quarter turn until the water starts flowing and go very, very slowly, that way it doesn't gush out everywhere.

Once the water flow dies down a little bit, that's how you know, you're ready to take the entire filter out. Once you've emptied anything that was inside of the filter, make sure that you check inside the cavity where the filter was, then put it back, and you're good to go.
