When you work with appliance repair, you need to be familiar with working with tools. You may already be familiar with the typical wrenches and screwdrivers, but in appliance repair, you’ll need to know more–such as voltage meters and even single and multiphase compressor testers. That’s why it’s crucial to make sure that you are equipped with enough knowledge to properly use the tools you’ll need, remember to take them when you are working on a job.

Get the Proper Training

For the basic tools that everyone has in their toolbox, you don’t necessarily need training. However, if you are going into appliance repair, that training becomes absolutely crucial. Especially when you are working with refrigeration or any type of electricity, you need to have the necessary skills and knowledge to successfully and safely make the repairs.

You can take either a one week course or a more in-depth three-week class that will help to give you the knowledge that you need to service appliances. That means that as you are learning, you should already have a core understanding of how to use basic tools, which allows the more advanced training on the use and application of more advanced tools to become more effective.

Knowing the Basic Tools

Wrenches, screwdrivers, and pliers are all pretty common tools that everyone has around their house. Of course, we all know that it’s important to use the right size screwdrivers; if you don’t, you could round the heads, making the screw very difficult to remove. That’s why it’s always important to have a nice variety of screwdriver sizes around.

Adjustable wrenches are also ideal to have when making sure that you have the right size for your project. Additionally, wire strippers, a hammer, and a putty knife are all important tools regardless of the situation. To store them all, be sure that you have a high-quality tool bag to use. That, in turn, allows you to store your tools while also organizing them, which helps to save you time when you are working.

Understanding More Complex Tools

If you are working with refrigeration or any type of sealed systems, there is an entire set of tools that you’ll need to get. In that scenario, it’s absolutely crucial to have all the tools necessary to do your work. Items like refrigerator scales, refrigerator gauges, and a vacuum pump are just a sample of the specialty equipment that you’ll need.

Also, because you’ll be working with electricity, in many cases you’ll need to have an analog or digital meter. When working with these tools, safety should be your utmost priority; if you don’t use them properly, you could risk electrocuting yourself. So be sure to cut the power when it is needed in order to check the appliance or the outlet connected to the appliance.

Other Items For Your Work

Finally, if you do appliance repair, you should also consider some other items and equipment to aid your work. For example, a shop vac (although not a tool) can be very helpful in the course of your work. You’ll be able to clean up any mess that you may make or, which matters especially if you are completing work in a well-cleaned home.

Another set of items to consider as part of your equipment either washable or disposable shoe covers. These may seem like silly items to have, but wearing them when entering the home of a customer shows them that you respect their home. And of course, you can help to avoid getting any dirt on their floors, increasing the chance they’ll have you back for another job.
